I was very sad to hear that REM is to disband.
I first became aware of their momentous music back in the early 90’s when I began to wake up from my 14 year hiatus of denial and inner (Metaphysical Twin) self repression. I was filled with the usual Spiritual optimism of knowing the world would be a vastly improved place to live in if only people ditched the exterior Ego and money-obsessed facet, choosing instead to pursue inner desires and the expansive force of spiritual love (I would have said ‘brotherly’ but of course that word has been co-opted and twisted by the Freemasons) and universal desire for wholeness and growth as a complete unit – a spiritual communion of minds.
Back then I really did view Icons as spiritual prophets and musical seers of crystal balls as so many of them spoke about the future in a way that was comprehensible i.e. not coated in obscure, incoherent references.
Much of REM’s musical output at that time significantly enhanced my development and understanding of the world and people – separately and as reflections of one another. Although over 17 years ago I vividly recollect the feelings and higher intelligence gained from listening to REM in the BTCV bus, being driven around Devon from site to sight…… from ‘The Great Beyond’, through ‘The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite’, to ‘Losing My Religion’, thinking how simple everything would be once the truth was revealed and people woke up to the voice of their intuitive Metaphysical Twin ……….
